Clearly visible from outside behind the glass facade, the grasp pendulum also provides a thematic introduction to the exhibition on human motor functions in the Medical Technology Science Center. The eight-metre high installation visualises the quality and complexity of grasping. It consists of three pendulum arms suspended in parallel, each of which carries 12 inward and outward-facing monitors. The screens show virtual hands which interact with each other from one screen to another.
The dramaturgy of the hand movements is based on different types of grip: a spherical grip for round objects, a hooked grip for narrow objects and a cylindrical grip for objects of cylindrical shape. At the beginning the hands throw each other little balls, then they press against the inside of the screen. Virtual movement is transformed into real movement as the pendulums begin to swing and the balls roll through the screens. The swinging movements increase as the hands then pull handles to draw colour areas into the monitors. When one monitor crosses another, the colours are blended. The culmination of this interaction between virtual and real dynamics is when the hands push the pendulum rods as shown in continuation in the monitors and thereby reinforce the swinging movement even further.
After each auto-active cycle visitors can interact with the installation using an interface. Camera tracking transfers the movement of the visitor’s hands onto the pendulum monitors in freeze frames until all the monitors are filled with gestures. The pendulums can also be directed to the left or right by means of a wiping movement. Real-time control of the motors means that the hand movements are converted into real movements directly, making image and pendulum precisely synchronous.
